Requirements for Pastoral Care “Practicum”
I. Consider and select a Pastoral Education program.
Postulants/Candidates are required to participate in either a formal Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at a local hospital, or a Community-Based Pastoral Care training component from one of the following options: Community of Hope; Hospice; Stephen Ministry; Grace Corps, or another agency approved by the Examining Chaplain of the Pastoral Care area of study.
II. Submit a written Proposal describing how you intend to complete this unit of training and application for your Pastoral Care Education:
A) Postulants/Candidates are asked to develop and submit a written proposal for their Pastoral Care education experience. Some hospitals provide a traditional Clinical Pastoral Education CPE program, but most do not. Other “community-based” options are available from which to choose (as listed in your DSM manual & reiterated above.) In addition, some of you may have professional formal education in this particular area as part of your career training, which may fully or partially meet the CPE requirement.
B) Once you have chosen your agency for training, please submit the written proposal to the Examining Chaplain of the Pastoral Care component for approval. Include in your written proposal any career experience that may fully or partially fulfill the requirement in this area. Also include any related formal education or training which may serve to complete the requirements.
C) The Examining Chaplain will ask for clarification if necessary and then approve your proposal. When you have received that approval, proceed to step III.
III. Complete the agreed on practicum work. Since formal CPE training is essentially unavailable in our Diocese, it is difficult to specify the number of hours required for the alternative CPE experience, but the DSM is asking each Postulant/Candidate to show a serious commitment to this pastoral care training, and requires detailed documentation of your participation during the pre-approved length of time.
IV. Submit your written summary report.
Once the Postulant/Candidate has completed the training and “hands-on” chaplaincy experience, as agreed, s/he is asked to submit a written report that includes:
Submit this report to the Examining Chaplain who will discuss the report with you. If, in the opinion of the Examining chaplain, your unit/report needs additional work, you will be notified exactly where further work or input is required.
When your report is accepted, the Examining Chaplain will then issue approval notification and submit the approved report to the DSM Coordinator so that the report may be added to your academic progress file*
